LIVEITUP NEEDS HELP

Some changes are going on at CJAM right now, and there has been talk of canceling LIVEITUP in favour of a Free-Form program.

We could use some support to help us to show that LIVEITUP is still relevant and that we have listeners who would like to see us stick around.

If you have the time, please post a comment here or send me an email at maddockk@uwindsor.ca showing your support, so that the CJAM management and board can see that there is still a place for the music we play and the news and information we give on the air.

Thanks for your time and years of support.

I am a student studying in Toronto but grew up in Windsor. I started listening to your show last year and even though I'm no longer in the area I try and catch the show every week online. I hope that your show sticks around for a long time to help me get through those long weeks of studying. Every day I "liveitup" so should all of you in Windsor and around the world!

I'm from Windsor and I catch liveitup as often as possible; the show and the host promote all things positive and inspire me in more ways then one. It offers a great variety within the genre and remains one the few times that I'll choose radio over CDs when in the car or at home. The show offers on the air info about concerts and venues, reviews and great suggestions that I find myself always relying on. I can always count on hearing something new on liveitup; even if it's not to my tastes, I respect and appreciate the fact that someone is as committed as the host to promoting new bands and new music - on top of Canadian bands which I notice more and more. The windsor music scene owes a lot to this show and we'll surely witness a great void there if it is taken off the air. I can't say enough, I only hope that Cjam realizes the gem that they have, come to their senses, and decide to continue sharing this crucial show with Windsor and surrounding areas. Best of luck liveitup!

I've been listening to 'liveitup' for as long as it's been on and I will be sorely disappointed if CJAM removes it from the air. If I miss the show, I know that the playlist will be posted online and it's a great way to find new music. Here's hoping for the best and that you remain on the airwaves!

Liveitup is a great show with a dedicated host to lose it to a free form slot would be a terrible loss. Listeners out there show your support.....leave a message and let CJAM know that liveitup is important! Cheers

Thank you so much for your support, folks. It really does make a difference. The discussion continues and I will keep you all updated.

interesting that you're deleting all of the negative comments. Once again, I do not like your show.

I deleted the single negative comment because there seemed to be no rationale behind it besides, evidently, spite. If, perhaps, a legitimate criticism were to be offered, as opposed to saying that you simply "don't like" the show, then maybe improvements could be made so that your opinion might change. To seek out someone who is legitimately asking for help only to do what you can to damage their cause, and to do so anonymously, is not only spiteful and rude, it is cowardly and without honour.
If you have a serious criticism, aside from personal preference, please send me an email or post it here. If all you wish to do is figuratively kick someone while they're down behind a screen of anonymity, then there is nothing I can do to make fix the situation.
Basically, if you have something to say, step up, take responsibility, and say it. Otherwise, we have no use for your negativity here.

It seems like everyone has been posting here anonymously so i didn't thing that would be a big deal. I in fact like a decent number of the bands you play on your show, I just don't like the way that you present them.
If you want critism then here it goes:
1. You talk for incredible amounts of time, sometimes going over the 10 minute mark, usually about things that are of no use to the people listening. A single show that is listed on a bands myspace for Washington is of no use to a Windsor audience.
2. You do a show dedicated to playing christian bands and yet you play good clean fun, anti-flag, against me, strike anywhere, fucked up, propagandhi, searching for chin, ect... These are all bands that take a very anti christian stance.
3. I don't feel that CJAM should give religiously slanted shows primetime slots (let alone two christian hardcore shows). Those slots would be better filled by longtime programmers who have worked on their shows for years.
4. Your canadian stable of bands is very small. There's a lot more to canadian hardcore than Means and Champion side projects.

I can understand if you were a new programmer and were working out the kinks, but you've been doing your show for 2 years and I have barely seen any improvement.

Thank you for putting up some coherent objections. Here are my responses.

1. First, I rarely mention specific shows that are not in the area. I do try to let people know where the bands are, in passing, so that people might get some idea of a) if the bands are actively touring and b) how long they might be away so that they can have a notion of when to expect them.
I have had my show reviewed twice since its inception, and on both occasions I have been complimented for the amount and quality of information I give about the artists I play. This was from the panel appointed by CJAM, including members of both the former and current CJAM management, as well as volunteer listeners. I accept this as a legitimate opinion, but the rest of the feedback that I have received on this matter has been from people experienced in radio broadcasting and the coordination and management of a radio station, and so will have to accept their assessment of my performance. I will, however, keep this criticism in mind during future episodes.

2. My show is not dedicated to playing solely Christian music, but I do endeavour to give these artists a greater focus than many other shows do. That being said, I am not so close-minded to believe that other, non-Christian music is not valid or that listeners don't want to hear a range of bands within the genres that I play, Christian and non-Christian alike, and so I do not restrict my playlist by excluding bands some of whose views I might not necessarily share.

3. Aside from the fact that you are beating a straw man by classifying my show as a Christian-Hardcore show (I do not and have never claimed that my show is any such thing) but there are not, to my knowledge, any other shows on CJAM that claim to be so, either. On the topic of religiously slanted shows, what of Islam Dunk? Or Boker Tov? Or Religiously Speaking? Or Names Of God? Every one of these show is a primetime show and is DIRECTLY religious, unlike my own which merely gives a voice to a genre often neglected. Should these programs be removed for more generic programming? By the same token, what of shows like Milk and Vodka, which is run by the feminist collective, or R.O.Y.G.B.I.V which is an LGBT show? Both of these occur in prime time and both are directly voicing their points of view. Should these shows be removed for more mainstream programming? CJAM is a station that is dedicated to giving voices to many points of view, not just the most common, as well as to under-represented groups, and so to paint a target on a show that merely plays some Christian music is to criticise the station as a whole for this policy. Not only that, but, if your suggestion is carried through universally, it would be to say that each one of these shows should be replaced. Also, to say that the primetime slots that contain all of the programs mentioned above should be replaced by “longtime programmers who have worked on their shows for years” is to suggest that not one of those hosts has worked on their shows as I am assuming that you are suggesting that you have. Do you truly think that this should be so?

I am both an experienced and long-time programmer, and I have worked hard on my show for years. This is the opinion of both fellow programmers at the station as well as the former management and program review committee. I can personally attest that I have put much of my time and passion into this program, in gathering a comprehensive collection of the music and artists that I play, in locating rare content, in finding new artists and keeping well informed on the activities of the artists and developments within the genre as a whole. I accept that it seems that you disapprove of the fact that religiously slanted shows, and it must then follow that directly religious shows, should not be in the primetime slots on CJAM, but this is not the policy of the station, nor do I think it should be.

4. I routinely play over the required 35% of Canadian content during my show and, once again, was complemented both on this fact as well as for the variety of Canadian music I do play while being reviewed. I am constantly searching for new Canadian music, and just this week played a young Hamilton Hardcore band, From Greater Heights, that I am fairly positive has never been played on the station. This is not the only new band that I have discovered and brought to the airwaves. Artists such as Counterparts, A Sight For Sewn Eyes, Die Atlantic, Illuminate The Sky, Set Anchors, Abandon All Ships, Structures, Lifeboat and Dancing With Paris, to name a very small selection, are all bands that I was, if not the first to play, then am one of the few that has at all. These are all bands that otherwise do not have a significant voice on radio, if any. I will admit that there is certainly more Canadian Hardcore out there aside from Continuance (the only Means side project I know of), though of Canadian Champion side projects I know nothing. I maintain, however, that I am constantly searching for new Canadian music and have brought quite a few budding Hardcore bands to the airwaves and intend to continue to do so.

Again, I really do honestly appreciate the criticism. It was a “big deal” to me, though, that someone who would go out of their way to express a negative opinion to someone looking for help would only do so anonymously, providing absolutely no grounds for their criticism. You have presented your arguments, and I have done my best to respond to them and justify the reasons why I do what I do on my show. I will, quite seriously, keep them in mind if/as I continue on my show.
